Young wine talents competed against each other at this year’s WinePlanet Trophée Junior here at Pálffy Manor. The Slovak World Championships in the Junior category brought together 19 competitors from 13 vocational secondary schools and hotel academies.

An excellent opportunity to test their skills, meet experienced professionals, and gain valuable knowledge—this is what the WinePlanet Trophée competition is all about, which this year took place with the support of VIAJUR and Pálffy Manor. The young sommeliers were evaluated by an expert jury led by Miroslav Jajcay, President of the Association of Sommeliers of the Slovak Republic. It is this association that organizes the competition, which develops young promising professionals in the field of winemaking.
Connecting History with Young Talent
Sensory evaluation of selected samples, a test focused on knowledge of viticulture and winemaking, as well as service and presentation of selected wines—these are the disciplines that tested the competitors’ experience and knowledge. The attractive prizes from this prestigious two-day competition were awarded to Radovan Komorovský from the Hotel Academy in Liptovský Mikuláš, Ivana Andelová from the Private Vocational Secondary School in Trnava, and Bianka Paulíková from the Secondary Vocational School of Trade and Services in Žiar nad Hronom. We are delighted that these talented students competed for the title of Slovakia’s best junior sommelier right here with us. “It was an excellent opportunity to connect a competition of young talents with a place and location that has such a rich history,” explains Róbert Páleník, sommelier at VIAJUR winery, who is also a member of the ASSR presidium.

The Future of Sommeliership
Together with VIAJUR, we prepared a presentation of our premises and services for the competitors, allowing them to gain closer insight into the behind-the-scenes operations of the entire concept. “We took the competitors on a tour of the winery, and they also tasted the gastronomy of PaB Pálffy Manor restaurant. We are pleased that we could convey not only the atmosphere but also present the actual functioning of the individual operations,” says Tomáš Dilong, Production Director at VIAJUR. The competition was also an excellent opportunity to bring more attention to the sommelier profession. “The fact is that this profession is currently in the background, which also affects Slovak winemaking and viticulture. It is precisely sommeliers who help spread the good name of quality Slovak wines. Their role is to advise customers well, but they are also an extension of every single winemaker they can represent. We therefore greatly value the education of young sommeliers, which is actively overseen by ASSR, and we are pleased that in this way we could support their activities aimed at supporting future wine professionals,” concludes Tomáš Dilong.

We at Pálffy Manor thank you for the opportunity to host this wine competition. We trust that all participants took away many new experiences and insights that will help them grow professionally.
